Christmas in Canada

Christmas in Canada

Christmas in Canada is one of the most important holidays of the year. It is celebrated, for the most part, the same way as in other Western countries, but it still has its own characteristics. Canada is a multicultural country, so some traditions were brought there by immigrants. Thus, a series of Christmas holidays in Canada begins on December 24th. On this day, many residents of the country finish work in the first half of the day, and the 25th and 26th are considered days off.

Canadian Christmas traditions include decorating the tree and exchanging gifts. Interestingly, the first Christmas tree in North America was erected in Quebec in 1781. It belonged to Baroness Riedesel, who hosted British and German officers at Christmas. The hostess of the house decided to meet her fellow countrymen with a huge fir tree, which was decorated with fruits and candles.

Canadians often serve roast turkey, seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes and sauces at their holiday table. Canadians' favorite Christmas desserts are based on English traditions, such as plum pudding. Christmas cookies are given to each other as small souvenirs. No Christmas celebration would be complete without fruit cake. On December 26, Canadians recover from rich holiday feasts and go shopping. Thus, Canadians call December 26th Boxing Day. On this day, stores offer the biggest discounts on goods, and shoppers make the largest number of purchases of the year.

Mass celebrations during the holidays are also not alien to Canadians. One of the traditions is Christmas parades. For example, most Canadian cities have a Santa Claus parade in December. The citizens themselves also take part in the parades; the action is especially large-scale in large cities such as Vancouver and Toronto. By the way, the Santa Claus Parade in Toronto has been taking place for more than 100 years and is considered the longest running children's parade. Festivals of lights are also popular in Canada at Christmas. They are held in almost all provinces of the country, competing in skill and scale of the event. Memorable holiday festivals take place in Montreal, where the Christmas cultural program is framed by historic buildings and cobblestone roads.
