Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day is a religious feast day in honor of the patron saint of Ireland which is held on the seventeenth of March. Nowadays this holiday has become an international festival of Irish culture.

Saint Patrick was born in the fifth century in Roman Britain. At the age of sixteen he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. After some years he managed to escape. Later Saint Patrick returned to Ireland as a missionary and brought Christianity.

Сelebrations of St. Patrick's Day include public festivals, parades and Irish dancing. A lot of people wear green clothes as a holiday symbol. Other famous symbols are the shamrock, the harp and a mythological creature known as the leprechaun.

Pubs and restaurants serve traditional Irish food and drinks. The most common Irish dish is corned beef and cabbage. Until the nineteen seventies Irish laws prescribed pubs to be closed on the seventeenth of March.

In the late nineties the Irish government decided to popularize it to develop tourism. In the beginning of the twenty-first century St. Patrick's Day became very popular all over the world. Nowadays a lot of people annually visit Dublin to take part in St. Patrick's Festival.
