Праздник "All Fools's Day"

ALL FOOLS` DAY

All Fools` Day or April Fools` Day is celebrated on the first of April. This day is well-known in many countries but it is no a public holiday. On the first of April people play jokes on their friends and colleagues.

Victims of these pranks are called April Fools. In the UK jokes traditionally should be played before the afternoon. That is why a person who hoaxes after midday is also called April Fool.

The origin of this holiday remains uncertain. The most popular explanation is that the tradition of playing pranks on the first of April goes back to the period of revising the old Julian calendar. In the sixteenth century Pope Georgy The Third introduced a new calendar for the Christian world. Prior to 1582, the beginning of the year was celebrated on or around the first of April.

The adoption of the Gregorian calendar shifted the New Year festivities to the first of January. People who celebrated the holiday according to the new calendar played tricks of those who continued to celebrate the New Year on other dates. Eventually, the practice of prank-playing became an annual tradition.

Nowadays April Fools` Day is mostly popular among children. However the mass media such as newspapers, TV programs, radio stations and the Internet also gets involved by reporting fake stories and fictional news on the first of April.
