The English Genius

Introduction

William Shakespeare

( was born April 26, 1564 – died April 23, 1616 , in Stratford-upon-Avon ) was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer of the English language, and the world's preeminent (выдающийся) dramatist. He wrote about 38 plays and 154 sonnets, as well as a variety of other poems.

Shakespeare's Work s Plays

A number of Shakespeare's plays are widely regarded as among the greatest in the English language and in Western literature. Shakespeare's plays can be placed into three main stylistic groups :

early comedies and histories (such as A Midsummer Night's Dream and Henry IV, Part 1 )
middle period (which includes his most famous tragedies , Othello , Romeo and Juilet , Macbeth , Hamlet and King Lear , as well as "problem plays" such as Troilus and Cressida and Measure for Measure )
later romances (such as The Winter's Tale and The Tempest ).

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre has become almost as famous as the playwright himself.

General Appearance .

Built to the engineering standards of 1599, the famous playhouse was a large circular structure, three stories high. A small straw hatched roof only partially covered the circular structure, giving it an appearance very much like a modern day football stadium where thе с enter is uncovered.

Sonnets

Shakespeare's sonnets are a collection of 154 poems that deal with such themes as love, beauty, and mortality. The Sonnets were written over a number of years, probably beginning in the early 1590s.

Sonnets. Characters

The first 17 sonnets are written to a young man. These are called the procreation sonnets.

Most of them, however, 18 -126, are addressed to a young man expressing the poet's love for him.

Sonnets 127-152 are written to the poet's mistress expressing his love for her.

The final two sonnets, 153-154, are allegorical.

Readers of the sonnets today commonly refer to the characters as the Fair Youth , the Rival Poet and the Dark Lady .

It is not known whether the poems and their characters are fiction or autobiographical.
