«"Barcelona's architecture"»
Barcelona is the capital and the most popular city of the Autonomous(the first-level political division of the Kingdom of Spain) Community of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, after Madrid, with a population of 1,621,537 within its administrative limits on a land area of 101.4 km2 (39 sq mi). The urban area of Barcelona extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of over 4,200,000 on an area of 803 km² (310 sq mi), it is the sixth-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Ruhr area, Madrid and Milan. Barcelona is located on the Mediterranean coast.
Barcelona is recognized as a Global City due to its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Indeed, it is a major economic center and a growing financial center; one of European principal Mediterranean ports can be found here as well as Barcelona international airport, which handles about 30 million passengers per year. Barcelona is the 12th-most-visited city in the world and the 4th most visited in Europe after London, Paris and Rome. Barcelona is the 15th most "livable city" in the world according to lifestyle magazine Monocle.
The foundation of Barcelona is the subject of two different legends. The first attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules 400 years before the building of Rome. The second legend attributes the foundation of the city directly to the historical father of Hannibal, who named the city Barcino after his family, in the 3rd century BC.
The Torre Agbar is a 38-storied tower located between Diagonal and Carrer Badajoz. It was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel . The tower has a total of 50,693 square metres.
It was opened in June 2005.
According to Jean Nouvel, the shape of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat , a mountain near Barcelona, and by the shape of a geyser rising into the air.
Its design combines a number of different architectural concepts . It is covered with a façade of glass , and over 4,500 window openings cut out of the structural concrete.
Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with mild, humid winters and warm, dry summers.
The Sagrada Família , is a large Roman Catholic church in Barcelona designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926 )
The style of Sagrada Familia is variously likened to Spanish Late Gothic and Spanish Baroque. While Sagrada Familia falls within the Art Nouveau period, known as "Modernism" in Spain.
The Church has three grand facades: the Nativity façade to the East, the Passion façade to the West, and the Glory façade to the South
Casa Batlló , is a building restored by Antoni Gaudí and Josep Maria Jujol, built in the year 1877. It was originally designed for a middle-class family.
The building looks very remarkable. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the façade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and was likened to the back of a dragon or dinosaur
