(P, W) Warm up Ask learners to describe their neighbours. Ask them what relationships they have with their neighbours. (I, P, G) Pre-Reading Divide learners in groups and ask them to choose the correct definition for the words. Encourage learners to use dictionaries. When learners finish, discuss the answers with the entire class and ensure that learners understand the definitions. Give example sentences with these words. (G, W) Reading Learners read a short story “Alberto’s new neighbours.” When they finish reading ask the following question: What clues helped you realise who Alberto and Mimi and their neighbours were? Ask learners to identify sentences or words/phrases which helped them to identify who Alberto and Mimi and their neighbours were. Learners read the story again and answer True/False questions. Differentiation: more able learners should give evidence from the story to prove that the answer is True/False. (I, W) Formative assessment Less able learners: Learners work individually and write the names of the characters to complete the sentences. More able learners: Learners answer open ended questions based on the story. They should use their own words to answer the questions. When you check answers with the whole class and ensure that learners understood the story, ask the following questions: Did you like the story? Why (not)? Which pet do you prefer to have: a cat or a dog? Why? Why do cats call people staff and dogs call people owners? Do you agree? |
