Today we shall speak with you about the most famous holidays and customs of Great Britain. Besides, there are too many guests today in our class-room, that's why let's show them our language skills. We'll see your knowledge of British traditions, sing a song,

- And our lesson will take place using the interactive whiteboard. From you, we need your knowledge, skills, smiles and good humor.And what are we going to do now?

Describe your mood will help glossary mood. Look closely at the screen. Choose your favorite adjective and use it in their proposals. I hope that it will be interesting for you during our lesson. That's why we are going to know more about British holidays today.

As we know there are several holidays in the year. And today we'll talk about only late-autumn, winter and early-spring holidays in Britain and traditions connected with them.

St. Valentine’s Day.

One of the international holidays is St. Valentine’s Day. St. Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is not a legal or a national holiday. Banks and offices are not closed, but it is a happy little festival for among people of all ages.

St. Valentine is the patron of sweethearts. February 14 is the anniversary of his death.

One of the legends says that Valentine was Christian priest who lived in the 3 century A.D. He was put into prison by roman authorities for his teachings and was beheaded on February 14. According to the legend he performed a miracle — he cured his jailer’s daughter of her blindness. Before the execution he wrote her a letter signed «From Your Valentine».

Another legend says that the same Valentine wrote to children and friends who loved him from the jail.

On this day many people make a declaration of love and propose marriage. And if they’ve already found their love, they just remind about it and make surprises or give presents to each other.

The main symbol of this holiday is valentine. It’s a small heart-shaped card.It is often coloured red, has red trimmings and pictures of hearts. It is put into the postbox of that person whom you like.

The day is the time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candy are favourite presents which sweethearts send to each other. Valentine candy is packed in red heart-shaped boxes and sold for this one day.

It is a good day for parties, especially by young people. The hosts trim the hall with red and white paper hearts.

This holiday gives people happiness and joy. For sweethearts this holiday is another reason to show their love.

It is a very interesting holiday and many people like to celebrate it.

Christmas

Christmas is Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. For millions of Christians throughout the world it is the happiest and the busiest time of the year. No one knows the exact date of Christ's birth but most Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25. The word Christmas comes from Christes masse, an early English phrase that means Mass of Christ.

People of different countries celebrate Christmas in various ways. People in the United States and Canada decorate their homes with Christmas trees, wreaths and ornaments. City streets are filled with coloured lights; the sound of bells and Christmas carols can be heard everywhere.

Children write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what presents they would like to get. Many department stores hire people to wear a Santa Claus costume and listen to children's requests. People send Christmas cards to relatives and friends. Many companies give presents to their employees.

A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes. Relatives and friends may join in trimming the tree with lights, tinsel, and colourful ornaments. Presents are placed under the tree. On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, families open their presents.

Many children believe that Santa Claus arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and brings presents. Some children hang up stockings so Santa Claus can fill them with candy, fruit and other small gifts.

In many parts of the United States and Canada groups of people walk from house to house and sing Christmas carols. Some people give singers money or small gifts or invite them for a warm drink.

Many people attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. They listen to readings from Bible and singing Christmas carols.

A traditional Christmas dinner consists of stuffed turkey, ь mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and a variety of other dishes. Some families have ham or roast goose instead of turkey. Pumpkin pie, plum pudding, and fruitcake are favourite desserts.

America and England celebrate an wonderful holiday. It is Mother`s Day. There is almost the same holiday on the 8th March in Kazakhstan and Russia. Mother`s Day is a celebration that honors mothers.

Mother`s day was first celebrated in 1908 in America.

In Great Britain and Ireland celebrate Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of March. They eat cake and buy gifts of chocolate or flowers for their mothers as way to thank them for all they do.

A popular saying is that God cannot be present everywhere and so he created mothers.

If it is not possible to see a mother, one can send presents and cards to her. Flowers and cakes are the traditional gifts for all mothers in England. All women try to be nice and happy on this day.
