Abiken Khassenov (1895-1958) – kuishi, dombyra player, composer, Kazakh SSR’s Distinguished Artist was born in Karagandy region. Abiken was one of the famous performers of sherpte kuis. He was first to notate and perform in the shertpe style the kuis of Tattimbet, Toka, Sembek, Abdi, Kyzdarbek. Using this dombyra, the kuishy performed the art kui “Konyr” and Tattimbet’s kuis “Saryzhailau”, “Kokeykesti”, “Sylkyldak”, “Bes Tore”, “Azamatkozha”, “Bozaigyr”, “Balbyrauyn”, “Kosbasar”, etc.

Famous Kazakh composers
Abiken Khassenov (1895-1958) – kuishi, dombyra player, composer, Kazakh SSR’s Distinguished Artist was born in Karagandy region. Abiken was one of the famous performers of sherpte kuis. He was first to notate and perform in the shertpe style the kuis of Tattimbet, Toka, Sembek, Abdi, Kyzdarbek. Using this dombyra, the kuishy performed the art kui “Konyr” and Tattimbet’s kuis “Saryzhailau”, “Kokeykesti”, “Sylkyldak”, “Bes Tore”, “Azamatkozha”, “Bozaigyr”, “Balbyrauyn”, “Kosbasar”, etc. His heartfelt tune “Konyr Kui” takes a special place in the history of Kazakh art. For his acting and songwriting Abiko Khasenov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Kazakhstan as well as musical school in the district center, where he was born is named in his honor.
Akhmet Zhubanov (1906-1968) – composer, conductor, academician, musicologist, the National artist of KazSSR, creator of Kurmangazy’s Kazakh State Academic Folk Instruments Orchestra was born in Aktobe region. The love to music, he inherited from his father and brother. Since childhood, he played on Dombyra and Violin. Akhmet headed the department of folk instruments in the Almaty Conservatory. Zhubanov was the author of a series of studies in Kazakh folk music, memoirs about oeuvre of folk performers “Gasyrlar pernesi”, “Zamana Bulbuly”, “Kurmangazy”, etc. In collaboration with L. Khamidi, he wrote the “Abai” opera which became a classic of Kazakh musical culture.
Dina Nurpeissova (1861-1955) – kuishi-composer, was born in Western part of Kazakhstan. On Dombyra she started playing when she was nine years old. She was a talented apprentice of the great Kurmangazi. Her work is characterized by uniqueness of her peculiar style of performance. The Music was the only goal and the meaning of her life. Wherever she was, dombyra was her inseparable companion. During her long career Dina had created many masterpieces of song. For creative work she was awarded the title of National Artist of Kazakhstan. Her kuis “Bulbul”, “Esemkonyr” and others have been stored in the gold reserves of Kazakh music.
Kenen Azerbayev (1884-1976) – akyn, composer, honored artist of Kazakhstan was born in district of Kordai, Zhambyl region. His father Azerbai and mother Uldar were famous singers, dombyra players. From childhood Kenen absorbed sound of music, early became interested in songs. Since eleven years he began to write poetry and music to them, he indited his first song “Boztorgai” and became famous as “bala akyn” – “the singer boy”, later he wrote “Koksholak”, “Kordai.” He was interested in aitys, glorified heroes in poems and ballads. He used to take the example of famous singers and composers like Zhambyl, Baluan Sholak, Shashubai. Throughout 80 years, akyn created his compositions and wrote his kuis. Kenen’s tunes were laconic, and elegant by melodic pattern. In addition to that he performed eposes like «Koblandy”, “Kerogly”, “Manas”, and participated in aityses.
Korkyt (IX century).
The great thinker, kuishi, hero of many legends lived in IX century on the banks of the Syr Darya. Using thin strings of kobyz he could convey the beauty of the surrounding world. He is considered as original founder of the tradition of performance of kuis on kobyz. Many kuishi, zhyrau and shamans bowed their heads in front of him, and accepted him as their mentor. In the legends he is described as a man who defied to death, seeking happiness for all mankind. On the banks of the Syr Darya River there is a monument in the form of kobyz, created by great architect Beck Ibraev. It is a tribute to commemoration of Korkyt. They say that on windy days, you could hear the sounds similar to the melody kyuis. Famous kuis: “Korkyt”, “Akku”, “Korkyttyn Saryny”, “Zhelmaya” and others
Kurmangazy(1818-1889).
Name of the great Kazakh classical composer Kurmangazy known around the world. He has made an invaluable contribution to the development of Kazakh instrumental music. He is called as the “father” of the kui. In his kuis Kurmangazi gave a thought, mood and dreams of his people of his time. At the sound of his music you could feel the beauty and the breath of the Kazakh steppe. Famous kuis: “Sary-Arka”, “Adai”, “Serper”, “Kishkentay” and others have been invaluable spiritual heritage. Kurmangazi – unique musician, the pride of the Kazakh people
Nurgisa Tlendiyev(1925-1998).
Nurgisa Tlendiyev was the famous Kazakh composer, conductor, dombyra player, Kazakhstan and USSR National Artist, Laureate of the State Prize “Halyk Kaharmany” was born in Almaty region. His father was kuishi and mother was a singer, so from childhood he started to demonstrate musical talents, and started to play with dombyra when he was 5 years old, and in 12 years became member of orchestra. Nurgisa was an originator and the Chief Conductor of the Folkloristic Ethnographic Orchestra «Otyrar Sazy». He composed music to 40 plays and 20 movies. His kuis “Akku”, “Ata Tolgauy”, “Alkissa”, songs “Saryzhailyau”, “Alatau”, “Oz Olim”, etc. became truly folk. The author of the “Kosh Keruyeni”, «Makhambet», “Farabi Sazy”, «Ata Tolgawy», «Aksak Kulan», «Makhambet”, etc. classics and around 500 musical compositions in various genres.
Tattimbet (1815-1860).
The famous kuishi Tattimbet Kazangapuly was born in Karaganda region in the Myrzhyk mountains. His father was a person close to art and music. From the early age he started to manifest his musical talents. His father Kazangap played significant role in his development. Tattimbet’s works have special place in the history of Kazakh music. He was the founder shertpe kui style. In instrumental music shertpe kui belongs to traditional school of kuis. This way of playing on Dombyra requires special, slow, quiet performance. Kuis of Tattimbet have been spiritual heritage of many generations. The most well-known kuis: “Sylkyldak”, “Kokeykesti”, “Alshagyr”, “Bestore”. “Shertpe Kui” is a kind of “plucking” manner of performance of kyuis on Dombyra.
Temirbek Akhmetov (1919-1952).
Temirbek Akhmetov was born in Almaty region. Since childhood, he grew up in the musical environment. His passion for music started to manifest itself from early childhood. Temirbek – peculiar composer-kuishi. His kuis concerned to the best examples of “Wrong-twined” performance. Perfectly mastered the art school of Zhetisu on kui performance. His style of playing on Dombyra differentiated with novelty, iridescence performance. Since 1937, Akhmetov had worked in the orchestra of the Kurmangazy. For outstanding achievements in the arts, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Kazakhstan. Kuis: “Sherniyaz”, “Zhetim bala” have a special place among the repertoire of professional dombyra players.
Yhylas Dukenuly (1943-1916).
Yhylas Dukenuly – prominent Kazakh kuishi was born and raised in Zhanaarka, Zhezkazgan region. His father and grandfather were kobyz players. Their talent was transmitted by inheritance to Yhylas who grew up and matured to the tune of kobyz. With the lapse of time, he continued the path of the legendary kuishi Korkyt. Yhylas – one of the prominent representatives of the Kazakh national music. His name has a special place of honor in the history of the Kazakh culture and art. After Korkyt, Yhylas was a man who was able to “animate, infuse life” kobyz strings, stringed musical instrument that holds a lot of secrets. Nowadays, there are many followers of him. Famous kuis of Yhylas: “Akku”, “Erden”, “Kaskyr” and many others have been the musical heritage of the Kazakh people.
