Define “mass media” and explain their importance;

List different ways their friends get information by interviewing them;

Develop critical thinking by classifying the information about social media

Assessment criteria

learn and use specific vocabulary and modal verbs correctly; express and exchange their opinions on the topic; identify problems and work out solutions

Vocabulary: mass media, broadcast, documentaries, soap operas, advantages and disadvantages

Grammar: Modal verbs-can/can’t, should/shouldn’t, must/mustn’t

The students read the sentence and predict the topic and the objectives of the lesson

Descriptor: students read the statement, try to work out its meaning, discuss it, guess they are going to talk about different forms of getting information and discuss their positive and negative sides


Brainstorming: students name sources of getting information and comment on or paraphrase the statement.

Students play “Mass Media Game”

Descriptor: students complete the sentences with appropriate answers and identify the determination of each mass media


The Mass media is:

  1. A way to inform people

  2. A mathematical account

  3. A special TV program etc

Key: 1.a 2.a 3.b 4.c 5.c

Less able students say full sentences with correct answers:

The mass media can give people a lot information.

You can listen to music on the radio, TV and the Internet.

You can find pages in magazines and newspapers.

The press consists of magazines and newspapers.

You can read the news both in the newspaper and the Internet.

Descriptor: students use modal verb “can”


Students are given worksheets, interview their friends and report the results

Descriptor: students ask peers the questions from questionnaire, write their answers in short, analyze how important mass media is for them.


Students watch the video “Alone in the crowd”.

Before watching learners predict its content and are asked to divide sheets of paper into 3 columns to classify the information

Descriptor: students watch the video, write down the advantages and disadvantages of social media from the video, discuss them in groups, think of solutions, present them to the class


Our lives became easier, faster and more simple.

We can talk to, see people from all around the world

We can become famous.

We can share our thoughts, opinions, tastes and get feedback from people like us

We can learn new things


Kids don’t spend enough time outdoors

You don’t meet new real people with real names

You don’t actually talk to your friends

You are not interested in your family members



Descriptor: students check their notes, discuss different possible solutions, write them down using modal verbs-should/shouldn’t and present.

e.g. We should spend more time with our family. We mustn’t stay before computer all day and night long.


Internet Safety Rules

Descriptor: learners work in groups, discuss, compile Internet Safety Rules using modal verbs must/mustn’t, present them to the class

e.g. We mustn’t give personal information

We must be careful talking with unknown people. Etc
